They are on a break.

Summary

  • Taika Waititi became the man to spice up the Thor franchise for Marvel, which earned him the love of the fans.
  • However, Thor 5 is happening without the filmmaker's involvement.
  • Waititi told Insider that he is focusing on other upcoming projects.
  • While his workload is insane, the director hasn't closed the door on future MCU films.

Taika Waititi and Marvel Studios go way back. When Marvel needed someone to spice up the Thor franchise, Waititi became that person, and he did it with a bang. 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, directed by the then-newcomer, became the best loved film in the Thor series and one of the fan favorites in the entire MCU.

It was a funny, wonderfully goofy, well-balanced movie with some fun set pieces and heartfelt scenes. Since its premiere, Waititi has become the darling of MCU fans.

He went on to make another Thor movie, 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder, which didn't achieve the success of its predecessor and received mixed reviews from audiences. But fans still believe in the filmmaker and have been waiting for his return to the franchise.

Unfortunately, according to the director, that will not happen anytime soon.

Taika Waititi addresses Thor 5 rumors

Talk of a fifth Thor movie in the works at Marvel Studios has been circulating in fan discussions and media reports for some time now. But when Insider asked Waititi directly about it at the premiere of his new sports dramedy Next Goal Wins, the director stunned everyone with the sad news.

‘I wouldn't know if [the rumors are] accurate,’ Waititi said. ‘I know that I won't be involved. I'm going to concentrate on these other films that I've signed on for.’

It seems that for whatever reason there has been a rift in the relationship between Marvel and Waititi. Whether it is the filmmaker's desire to move on or the studio wanting to do something new with Thor, the result is the same: the next Thor will be different.

Waititi not cutting ties with Marvel despite heavy workload

Taika Waititi's work capacity is impressive. When he talks about other films, it is not just one or two projects. His next movie is set to be the adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun. He is also entering the Star Wars universe and at work on a screenplay for the project for it.

There are also the reported adaptations of The Incal, Akira, Time Bandits, Interior Chinatown, a sequel to What We Do In The Shadows called We're Wolves, and a few other titles. The man's workload is insane.

So it's no surprise that he doesn't hold a grudge against Marvel for continuing the Thor franchise without him.

‘I love Marvel, I love working with them,’ the filmmaker said. ‘I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We're in an open relationship, and it's like if they want to see other people, I'm happy for that. I'd still get back into bed with them one day.’

Well, we hope that day will come sooner rather than later, even if it doesn't look like it from here.
