Talk of a reboot of The Office being in the works by showrunner Greg Daniels has been circulating in fan discussions and media reports for a few months now. The news proved to be polarizing among fans.
On the one hand, the mockumentary based on the British sitcom about the day-to-day life of an average paper company branch is one of the best comedies on TV and has been an escape for many viewers over the years.
It would certainly be exciting and nostalgic to reunite with the beloved characters and dive right back into their unique sense of humor. But a revival would mean continuing arcs that have all been wrapped up perfectly. And a remake is the same story told with a new cast. Do we really need that?
Creator weighs in
Fortunately, Greg Daniels feels the same way. The showrunner recently addressed the rumors in an interview with The Wrap, assuring fans that the original story will remain intact should he create another project.
'I don't like to think of anything as a reboot, you know what I mean?' Daniels said. 'Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show.'
The famed writer added that nothing has been made official yet, but if the new Office project is greenlit and created, the universe and likely format will be the only things connecting it to the original series.
'The notion of a reboot is not of interest,' Daniels said. 'The notion of maybe something like the way The Mandalorian is a new show in the Star Wars universe, you know what I mean? Something like the notion of this documentary crew doing a documentary about a different subject.'
Spinoff is the best option
From the showrunner's words, it is clear that he is interested in expanding The Office universe with a mockumentary show that will serve as a spinoff to the fan-favorite sitcom. And this is the best news fans could get.
The new workplace comedy can take the best of the original and leave out the parts that weren't so good and haven't aged well. We will have to get used to the new characters, but Daniels has proven through his shows like Parks and Recreation and the recent Upload that character building is his strong suit.
Plus, since the show would be part of The Office universe, we might get some heartwarming cameos from the original cast. And that would certainly be worth waiting for.
