That was brutal.

Summary

  • Throughout its long history, Supernatural has aired many memorably violent episodes.
  • But there's one that Jared Padalecki refuses to show his kids for a very good reason.
  • Ironically, that same episode is widely considered by the show's massive fanbase to be one of its best.

In its long 15-year history, Eric Kripke's iconic Supernatural aired 327 episodes, some more memorable than others. Just think of the two-part Season 2 finale where Sam Winchester dies and his brother Dean makes a deal with a demon to save him!

In fact, there have been plenty of shocking deaths and violence on the show (especially in the season finales), but for Jared Padalecki, one particular moment stands out among the rest. Even though this episode is widely considered to be one of the best in the series, the Sam Winchester actor is adamant about never showing it to his kids. And he has an ironclad reason for that.

Off-Screen & On-Screen Romance

Padalecki has three children with his wife Genevieve, ages 11, 10 and 6. Not surprisingly, Jared and Genevieve met on the set of Supernatural. She played the demon Ruby, Sam's friend and lover in Season 4.

While the real-life relationship between the actors developed on a happy scenario, the on-screen affair between Sam and Ruby was anything but smooth. After becoming a trusted close person in Sam's life, Ruby was eventually revealed to have a hidden evil motivation.

It turned out that Ruby had gained Sam's trust and separated him from his brother only to get him to kill the demon Lilith, which would free the demon worshiped god Lucifer.

In the Season 4 finale, Lucifer Rising, Jensen Ackles' character learns of the betrayal and rushes to reunite with Sam, but it is too late. Sam has already killed Lilith.

Then the brother kills Ruby in a unifying act of revenge. Sam holds her down and Dean stabs her with a special knife.

Uncomfortable Family Watching

Needless to say, this is the one scene Padalecki never wants his kids to see. They know Sam as Daddy, Ruby as Mommy, and Dean as Uncle Jensen, so watching the brutal episode could make for quite a childhood trauma.

'My wife was on the show in Season 4, and it was great. We met, went out, fell in love, all that. But at the end of Season 4, Daddy and Uncle Jensen killed my wife,' Padalecki described the scene to Jimmy Kimmel. 'I held her by the arms while he stabbed her with a knife.'

No matter how much Supernatural fans praise Lucifer Rising for its shocking twist, amazing writing and brilliant acting, for the Padalecki family it is definitely a no-go for a cozy movie night.

'Not even in their 30s should they see that,' Kimmel jokingly said, with Jared's active support. And we can't help but agree.
