The theory is surprisingly plausible.

Summary

  • The theory that has been circulating in fan discussions for years is that Kevin from Home Alone grew up to become Jigsaw from the Saw franchise.
  • The theory is more of a joke, but there's actually a lot of evidence to support it.
  • Saw creator James Wan responded to the speculation in an interview with HuffPost.

It is Home Alone season, folks. Whether we like it or not, the 23-year-old Christmas classic will make its way to our screens, as it does every year. To spice up your Home Alone experience this year, as you rewatch the story of a boy who traps and hurts two grown men, consider the theory that's been circulating in fan discussions for years.

Kevin McCallister from Home Alone became John 'Jigsaw' Kramer from the Saw franchise

If you have never heard this theory before, you might feel like your mind has been blown. Of course, there are obvious inconsistencies in this theory, like Kevin being born around 1982 and Jigsaw playing his first mind game in 2001, when he was clearly much older than 19.

But other than that, this wild theory is surprisingly plausible. Here are just a few facts to prove it.

1. Both Kevin and Kramer are blond with blue eyes.

2. Both have a unique idea of justice and, when it comes to revenge, prefer to take matters into their own hands.

3. Both have anger issues and a penchant for torture disguised as childish games or pranks.

4. Both are talented engineers and can create intricate traps from improvised details.

5. Jigsaw's workshop looks a lot like McCallister's basement.

6. The iconic reverse bear trap is similar in design to the furnace that Kevin was so afraid of.

7. Kevin is obsessed with the idea that Old Man Marley might be a serial killer. Later, Marley uses the shovel, rumored to be his murder weapon of choice, to disarm Harry who is about to harm Kevin. This could play tricks on a child's mind and make him think that being a murderous vigilante is a way to be.

8. While Kevin seems fine at the end of Home Alone, there's no way that being abandoned on Christmas (twice) and targeted by two dangerous thieves didn't take a toll on his psyche.

What does the Saw creator think?

As you can see, the evidence is overwhelming. Even though it is impossible from a timeline perspective, the theory that Kevin became Jigsaw is quite believable and the creator of the first movie in the horror franchise, James Wan, thinks so too.

'It's amazing. I should've known all along that Macaulay Culkin would grow up to be John Kramer,' the filmmaker told HuffPost. 'I'm very flattered that people take the time to have fun with all these fan theories. I think that's why I make these movies. I want the fans out there to have fun with them.'

Of course, Wan took the theory as a joke, and so should we. But when you rewatch the Home Alone franchise this year, take a closer look. What if it is you who finds the next clue that proves Kevin may have grown up to be a serial killer, playing tricks and mind games with his victims?
