5 TV Show Reveals That Totally Blew Us Away (Spoilers)
Which was the most astonishing for you?
It's no secret that we watch TV shows for emotions that are hard to get in real life. Among them, shock and surprise are among the most powerful. So we all love a good mind-altering twist, and showrunners do their best to include one or two in their projects.
Of course, some do it better than others. Here are five examples of exemplary show reveals that have stuck in our minds for years. Beware of spoilers.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Mike Flanagan's first The Haunting project, based on Shirley Jackson's novel, was chilling and suspenseful enough to keep viewers engaged until the very end. But the most thrilling arc came in Episode 5, The Bent-Neck Lady, when we saw the youngest daughter, Nell, die in the title house and turn into the ghost woman with a broken neck who's been haunting the girl since childhood.
Every past apparition was replayed in a matter of seconds from the point of view of the now-dead Nell, and it completely floored us.
Game of Thrones (2011-2019)
HBO's flagship show had dozens of twists and turns that blew our minds. Just think of the death of main character Ned Stark in Season 1. But the most memorable and heartbreaking twist came in S6E5 The Door" when the story of the Starks' longtime servant Hodor was revealed.
The man sacrificed himself to save Bran Stark from the undead, and his final mission to hold the door was so intense that it damaged his younger version's brain, leaving him with only one word for the rest of his life. 'Hodor' is none other than Bran's abbreviated command to 'hold the door.'
Fringe (2008-2013)
Fox's sci-fi show deals with the theme of parallel universes investigated by the FBI's special unit consisting of three main characters. The personal lives of the characters are deeply involved in their investigations, so the show has many jaw-dropping twists and turns.
Probably the most shocking of them came in S2E14 Jacksonville, when one of the main characters, Olivia, discovers that her colleague and love interest Peter is actually from the alternate world and was taken by his father when his variant died in the prime universe.
Westworld (2016-2022)
The premiere season of Westworld was a true masterpiece of sci-fi, largely due to the stunning reveal in the finale. Throughout the season, we witnessed a variety of people enjoying themselves in the Wild West-themed park, which is populated by androids who play the role of 'hosts.'
Among them were a gentle newcomer, William, who fell in love with one of the androids, and a hardened veteran known as The Man in Black, who was one of the most sadistic guests. The finale revealed that they were one and the same man whose past and present collided on screen.
Dexter (2006-2013)
One of the most memorable twists in television history came with the Season 4 finale of Dexter. The protagonist is a serial killer who hunts murderers. In Season 4, his main opponent is the so-called Trinity Killer. In the finale, Dexter finally tracks him down and kills.
Afterwards, he has the feeling that he could give up the killing in order to be with his wife and son. But when he returns home, he finds the wife dead and the son covered in her blood. It turns out that the Trinity Killer murdered the woman just before Dexter caught him. The collective gasp and shock around the world that this episode caused when it first aired is hard to overstate.
