The Ultimate List of Underrated 90s Romance Movies You Need to Watch
There's no denying that the 90s were a peak era for romantic comedies.
Still, behind that "Pretty Woman", "Four Weddings and a Funeral", and "Notting Hill" spotlight, there's so many almost criminally underappreciated rom-coms.
1. "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" (1996)
It's a classic case of mistaken identity meets love triangle. Abby, a vet with a radio show, is shy and self-conscious, especially next to her knockout neighbor Noelle. When a caller, Brian, asks to meet Abby, she panics and sends Noelle in her place.
Cue the classic rom-com shenanigans. Brian falls for Noelle, thinking she's Abby, while the real Abby pines over the phone. It's a tangled web of who's-who and who-loves-whom, complete with a hilarious scene involving a Great Dane on roller skates.
2. "Forget Paris" (1995)
Love and basketball, but not the way you think. Mickey, an NBA referee, meets Ellen, an airline employee, in Paris. After a whirlwind romance under the Parisian lights (complete with lost corpses, thanks to Ellen's job), they tie the knot. But then real life hits.
The film hilariously shows their marriage as they deal with long separations, career challenges, and the pesky in-laws. It's not smooth sailing, but they find their way back to each other, because of course they do.
3. "Bed of Roses" (1996)
Lisa, a lonely career woman, receives a delivery of flowers from a secret admirer. Enter Lewis, a kind-hearted florist with his own baggage. He saw Lisa crying in her window one night and, well, you know how these things go.
Cue the sweet, albeit slightly stalker-ish romance. But when Lisa discovers Lewis' tragic past, she backs off, scared of getting hurt.
4. "Love Jones" (1997)
Darius and Nina, both artistic souls, meet at a Chicago club. Darius woos Nina with a sensual poem (because, why not?), sparking a passionate, yet tumultuous relationship. They struggle with the ups and downs of love, along with their ambitions and fears.
There's a memorable scene where they share a rain-soaked kiss that's straight out of a romance novel.
5. "Feeling Minnesota" (1996)
Freddie is set to marry Sam, a shady guy, as a debt payment by her brother. But then she meets Jjaks (yes, that's his name, but it's Keanu Reeves, so just let us have it), her brother's estranged brother, and sparks fly. They decide to run away together, stealing Sam's money in the process.
What follows is a bizarre road trip filled with gunfights, car chases, and questionable motel stays. Think of it as a love story on the run, with a side of dark humor.
6. "All Over Me" (1997)
Set in New York's Hell's Kitchen, this movie follows the tumultuous life of Claude, a teenage girl grappling with her sexual identity. She shares a deep bond with her best friend Ellen, but things get complicated when Claude develops feelings for her.
The plot thickens as Ellen starts dating a manipulative guy, Mark, pushing Claude towards a new friend, Lucy, an openly gay musician. Soon enough, Mark's violent nature leads to a tragedy.
7. "Dream for an Insomniac" (1996)
Frankie, a dreamy insomniac who lives for movies and romance, longs to escape her dull life at her uncle's café. Her world turns upside down when David, a handsome, aspiring actor, walks in.
Frankie is smitten and, encouraged by her quirky friend Allison, decides to pursue him. Frankie tries to win David's heart before he leaves for an acting job in New York.
8. "Manny & Lo" (1996)
This movie focuses on two sisters: 11-year-old Manny and 16-year-old Lo, who are on the run after escaping from their respective foster homes. Living out of convenience stores and moving from motel to motel, they lead a life of petty crime to survive.
When Lo discovers she's pregnant, their world turns upside down. They kidnap a lonely, middle-aged store clerk, Elaine, to help with the pregnancy. Despite the unusual circumstances, a unique bond forms among the trio, with Elaine becoming a mother figure.
9. "The Butcher's Wife" (1991)
Marina, a clairvoyant woman from a small seaside town, believes that her dreams have revealed her future husband – a New York City butcher named Leo. When they meet, it's love at first sight, at least for Leo.
They marry quickly and move to New York, where Marina's psychic abilities start affecting the lives of their neighbors. She begins matchmaking, much to the chagrin of Leo, who feels increasingly sidelined.
10. "Once Around" (1991)
The movie centers on Renata, a single woman who feels like the black sheep in her tight-knit but overbearing family. Enter Sam, an eccentric and boisterous millionaire who sweeps Renata off her feet.
Their whirlwind romance leads to a quick marriage, much to the dismay of Renata's family, particularly her father, who is skeptical of Sam's brash personality and unclear motives. All the while, Renata struggles to balance her family's expectations with her new life with Sam.
