The Most Underrated Zombie Horrors of the 2010s, Ranked
No obvious hits on this particular list.
10. The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)
Melanie, a young girl, is kept in a military base along with other children. They're strapped into wheelchairs and treated like dangerous criminals. But these aren't ordinary kids; they're infected with a fungus that turns people into zombies, or "hungries" as they're called here. Melanie is different, though – she can think and learn.
When the base is overrun by hungries, Melanie joins a group of survivors, including her favorite teacher, Helen, and a scientist interested in her unique physiology.
9. The Battery (2012)
Meet Ben and Mickey, two former baseball players wandering through New England after the zombie apocalypse. Their only rule? Keep moving. Mickey yearns for the old days – he's listening to music, missing girls, and being pretty useless. Meanwhile, Ben is the do-it-all survivalist.
The duo squat in abandoned houses and fish for food. But as the zombie population grows, they're forced to hole up in a car for safety.
8. It Stains the Sands Red (2016)
What happens when you find yourself being stalked by a lone zombie in the Nevada desert? This isn't your usual zombie herd situation. In "It Stains the Sands Red," Molly, a woman with a checkered past, gets stranded while en route to an airfield to escape the apocalypse. She soon realizes she's got company – a single, relentless zombie who just won't quit.
Unlike fast-moving hordes, this one's a creeper, and that makes escape all the more tricky.
7. Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)
The Aussie film "Wyrmwood" dives right into the action with mechanic Barry losing his family to the zombie plague. But there's a twist: his sister Brooke gets kidnapped by a mad scientist. Barry picks up a few strangers, modifies a car to run on zombie gas, and goes on a high-speed rescue mission.
Don't think it skimped on the gore and action; it's a straight-up bloodbath on wheels.
6. Little Monsters (2019)
In "Little Monsters," slacker musician Dave volunteers to accompany his nephew's kindergarten class on a field trip, mostly to impress the lovely teacher, Miss Caroline. What could go wrong? Well, zombies, obviously.
A military experiment goes awry and suddenly the petting zoo is less about the goats and more about the brain-eaters. Miss Caroline turns out to be a ukulele-playing, zombie-slaying badass, while Dave has to step it up to protect the kids.
5. Cargo (2017)
A dad walks through the Australian Outback with his baby on his back. No, this isn't the beginning of a bad joke; it's the premise of "Cargo." After a virus turns his wife into a zombie, Andy gets infected and has 48 hours before he turns. With his infant daughter Rosie in tow, he's literally in a race against time to find a safe haven for her. Along the way, he meets Thoomi, a young Indigenous girl who's hiding her infected dad.
4. One Cut of the Dead (2017)
Ever seen a one-take zombie movie? Well, that's what "One Cut of the Dead" seems to be – at first. The movie starts with a film crew shooting a zombie movie when, lo and behold, they're attacked by real zombies. The director insists on keeping the cameras rolling. But then, the movie flips the script, and I mean that literally.
Without spoiling too much, let's just say you get a hilarious behind-the-scenes look at the making of a disaster.
3. Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead (2014)
In "Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead," Martin, the sole survivor of a Nazi zombie attack, wakes up in the hospital with an undead arm grafted onto him. But it's not all bad news; the arm has superhuman strength.
Martin teams up with a group of American zombie hunters called the "Zombie Squad" to combat an entire army of Nazi zombies. They even reanimate a Russian POW zombie army for backup.
2. Here Alone (2016)
After a viral outbreak decimates the population and leaves infected individuals as bloodthirsty creatures, a woman named Ann finds herself alone and scared in the forest. She's learned to survive by staying hidden and rationing her meager supplies.
That solitude is shattered when she encounters a man and his stepdaughter. As they grow closer, the ever-present threat of zombies begins to wear down their trust and sanity.
1. The Cured (2017)
Ever wondered what happens to zombies after they're cured? "The Cured" explores this through Senan, a former zombie reintegrating into society. He's haunted by memories of the atrocities he committed while infected. His sister-in-law, Abbie, takes him in but is wary, as is the rest of society.
The tension is thick, and not everyone is thrilled about having ex-zombies as neighbors. As you can guess, things go south pretty quickly.
