S.W.A.T. Exiles premieres tonight and was renewed six weeks ago

Shemar Moore is back as Hondo tonight, on a different network, in a different show, with a second season already in the bank.

S.W.A.T. Exiles premieres Friday 25 September on Starz. Starz renewed it for a second season on 11 August — six weeks earlier, announced by Moore himself in a video. Nobody in the United States had seen an episode. Nobody had reviewed it.

Keep that date. Next week somebody will write that the show was renewed after a strong debut, and the renewal will be seven weeks old.

It is not season nine, and the numbers get borrowed anyway

The CBS S.W.A.T. ran eight seasons and 163 episodes between 2017 and its finale on 16 May 2025. Exiles is a separate Sony order, on a separate network, with Jason Ning as showrunner and a largely new cast. It continues Hondo's story; it does not continue the original's season count.

That distinction matters because the original's episode totals get quoted against the new show as though 164 were next in a sequence. It is a first season of ten.

The cancellation history is real and is routinely miscounted

CBS cancelled S.W.A.T. on 5 May 2023 and reversed itself within days, renewing it for what it called a seventh and final season. On 11 April 2024 the network rescinded the "final" designation and ordered an eighth. On 6 March 2025 it ended the show for good.

So: cancelled once and brought back once, then given a further reprieve, then ended. Not "cancelled and revived twice" — the 2024 reversal un-cancelled a season that had never actually been cancelled, only labelled as last.

Tonight is a genuine world premiere, whatever the sales notes suggest

Sony Pictures Television pre-sold Exiles into every major region before a frame aired: Starz in the United States, Disney+ across Latin America, Sky in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and New Zealand, Stan in Australia, WOWOW in Japan, LG Uplus in South Korea, AXN in Spain, beIN across the Middle East, North Africa and Turkiye, and Canal+ in Europe and Africa.

That volume of pre-sales usually means somebody has already seen it. Here it does not. Sony's own announcements state the series debuts day-and-date in select international markets, weekly on Fridays. No territory got it early. Tonight really is the first time anyone watches it.

• Shemar Moore as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental unit.
• Series regulars: Ronen Rubinstein as Jude Callan, Freddy Miyares as Ethan Cole, Zyra Gorecki as Cassidy Han, Lucy Barrett as Samantha Bishop, Adain Bradley as Malik Henderson.
• Jay Harrington returns as Deacon and Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Hicks, both in the pilot. David Lim appears as Tan during the first season.
• Ten episodes, weekly. Created and developed by Jason Ning; Sony Pictures Television and Original Film produce.
• Filmed in California from September 2025, wrapping 10 February 2026.

The premise is being sold as generational: a veteran team leader handed a squad of untested recruits. Which is, structurally, the same reboot logic that gave the original show eight seasons and three separate near-death experiences.

One thing to check before you set a reminder

The start time is not in any press release we can find. Starz has published the date and the weekly Friday pattern; at least one listings database has it at 9pm rather than the 10pm slot being repeated elsewhere. Check your provider's guide rather than a secondary listing, because nobody has sourced the hour to the network.

What is still unknown

How many episodes season two runs. Whether the international day-and-date rollout holds for every named territory or only the ones Sony has confirmed. And what Starz actually based an August renewal on — it has not said, and with no US airings to point at, the honest answer is international pre-sales and completed footage rather than any audience number.

A show about a man hauled out of retirement for one last chance has already been given a second one, in advance, by a network that had not yet let anyone watch the first.
