Reacher has led American streaming for five weeks and nobody agrees on its running total
Reacher has been the most-watched thing on American streaming for five weeks running. The figure everyone is quoting is measured in minutes, not people, and the running totals in circulation differ from each other by about four and a half billion of them.
For the week of 7 to 13 September, Nielsen put Reacher at the top of its streaming chart with 1,182 million minutes viewed. That is the fifth consecutive week the show has cleared a billion.
It is a genuinely dominant run. It is also being reported with a unit almost nobody converts.
1.18 billion minutes is not 1.18 billion anything else
Divide by sixty and the week comes to roughly 19.7 million hours. A season of Reacher runs about eight hours. So that week represents something on the order of two and a half million complete season-watches, spread across however many people started an episode and stopped.
Nielsen's figure counts United States minutes viewed through a television screen, persons two and up. Phone and laptop viewing is excluded by design. Every country that is not the United States is excluded entirely. Prime Video's own global numbers, when the platform chooses to publish them, measure something completely different and cannot be set beside this.
None of which makes the number soft. It makes it specific, and specificity is what disappears when a headline turns minutes into a superlative.
Two cumulative totals are circulating and they are not close
Alongside the weekly figure, two running totals for the season have been published: one set of coverage puts Reacher at around 5.5 billion minutes, another at 10 billion. Both appeared within weeks of each other, and at least one outlet has run both.
The gap is almost certainly a season total against a series total, or a Nielsen-only figure against a platform-supplied one. Nobody has said which, and the numbers are being printed as though they measure the same thing. If you see a cumulative Reacher figure this week, check what it is counting before repeating it.
The week of 7–13 September, in full
- Reacher (Prime Video) — 1,182 million minutes
- The Gentlemen (Netflix) — 881 million
- Lioness (Paramount+) — 834 million
- Ted Lasso (Apple TV) — 734 million
- SEAL Team (Paramount+ and Netflix) — 586 million
- Outer Banks (Netflix) — 568 million
- The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives (Hulu) — 561 million
- Beauty in Black (Netflix) — 513 million
- Silo (Apple TV) — 418 million
- Death of the Pastor's Wife (Netflix) — 324 million
Reacher's week is larger than the second and fourth placed shows combined. That is the comparison that actually holds, because every figure in the list was produced by the same method.
The chart is arriving faster now
Nielsen accelerated its streaming reporting on 16 September, moving client delivery to a daily cadence and shortening the lag on the public ranker. A show on a five-week streak is now visible about a fortnight after the fact rather than a month, which is why this run is being written about while it is still happening rather than after it ended.
What is still unknown
How much of the audience is watching on phones, which Nielsen does not see. What the streak looks like outside the United States, which Nielsen also does not see. And which of the two cumulative totals is the real one — a question that could be settled by one sentence from either Nielsen or Prime Video, and has not been.
The most-watched show in America has spent five weeks being described with a number most readers will silently mistake for a headcount. The number is minutes. It is still an enormous number.
