Marshals returns Sunday and it is not the first Yellowstone show on a linear network
Marshals comes back on Sunday, four and a half months after its first season ended. It is described as the first Yellowstone series to debut on a linear network, which would be news to Yellowstone.
Marshals returns for season two on 4 October, CBS, Sundays at 8pm. Season one ran 1 March to 24 May. That is a gap of nineteen weeks between a thirteen-episode broadcast drama finishing and starting again, which is quick by any standard and very quick for a network hour.
The premiere drew 9.52 million viewers. That is the number CBS built the turnaround on.
It is not the first Yellowstone series on a linear network
The claim in circulation is that Marshals is the first series in the franchise to debut on a linear network.
Yellowstone itself premiered on Paramount Network in 2018. Paramount Network is a linear cable channel. It is not streaming.
The accurate version needs one word changed: Marshals is the first series in the franchise to debut on a broadcast network. That is a genuine first and a meaningful one — it puts a Taylor Sheridan-universe show on free-to-air television for the first time, in front of an audience that does not subscribe to anything. "Linear" quietly hands that first to the wrong show.
Nine and a half million viewers against a 45 per cent Tomatometer
Critics did not take to it. Rotten Tomatoes has season one at 45 per cent from 20 reviews, average 6.0 out of 10. Metacritic gives 57 out of 100. The recurring note is that it lacks the parent show's narrative spark.
It is also the only new broadcast drama of 2026 to open near ten million viewers.
Those two facts are not in tension, they are the business. A franchise extension on CBS at 8pm on a Sunday is not competing for reviews; it is competing for the audience that was already watching the channel. Nineteen weeks to a second season is what happens when that works.
What the show is
- Created by Spencer Hudnut. Fourth series in the Yellowstone franchise, functioning as both spin-off and sequel.
- Luke Grimes returns as Kayce Dutton, picking up after his arc closed in the parent series. Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty and Gil Birmingham also carry over.
- New to the franchise: Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos and Tatanka Means. Season two adds Jefferson White.
- Season one: 13 episodes, 1 March to 24 May 2026.
- Kayce's wife Monica dies off screen, between the end of Yellowstone and the start of Marshals.
That last point is worth pausing on. A character who spent five seasons at the centre of the parent show's family is written out in the gap between two series, without a scene. Whatever the production reason, it is the kind of decision that tells you what the spin-off intends to be about, and it is not the family.
What is still unknown
The season two episode count, which CBS has not published. Whether the nineteen-week turnaround means a shorter order — that is usually how a fast return is paid for. And whether 9.52 million holds, since a premiere number and a season average are different animals and season one's full-run average has not been reported.
A franchise that built itself on cable and then streaming has ended up on CBS at eight o'clock on a Sunday, drawing the biggest new-drama audience on television and the worst reviews in its own family. Both of those are why it is back in nineteen weeks.
