Halloween Watch List: 10 Underrated Supernatural Horrors Worth Revisiting
Just don't blame us if you can't sleep afterward!
If you're as obsessed with the supernatural as I am, you'll love these lesser-known horror movies.
1. Oculus (2013)
The (somewhat tired) haunted mirror trope? "Oculus" takes it to the next level. Siblings Tim and Kaylie reunite after Tim's release from a psychiatric hospital. He was locked up for the murder of their parents, but Kaylie is convinced it was the work of the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror with a bloody history. They set up an elaborate experiment to capture the mirror's supernatural activities on camera, planning to destroy it for good. But the mirror has plans of its own.
2. The Witch (2015)
Robert Eggers' "The Witch" is set in 1630s New England and kicks off with a family banished from their Puritan plantation. They set up a farm near a creepy forest and soon enough, weird stuff starts happening. Baby Samuel disappears during a game of peek-a-boo with eldest daughter Thomasin, and their crops fail.
Accusations of witchcraft fly as animals turn malevolent and siblings Caleb and Mercy behave strangely. Caleb dies in agony after a mysterious encounter in the woods, leaving the family shattered.
3. Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)
Jessica, newly released from a mental institution, moves to a country house with her husband and their friend. But the house isn't empty; a mysterious woman named Emily lives there. They let her stay, which turns out to be a huge mistake. Jessica starts hearing voices and seeing a mysterious girl near the lake. But is she relapsing, or is something supernatural at play?
4. Session 9 (2001)
Who wouldn't want to do asbestos cleaning in an abandoned mental hospital? That's what Gordon and his team sign up for in "Session 9." Gordon, desperate for money after his wife's accident, takes on the job at the creepy Danvers State Hospital. The team discovers old patient interviews, specifically "Session 9," revealing a case of split personality.
One by one, the crew members start losing it. Gordon hears voices, Mike obsesses over the recordings, and Hank disappears after finding a stash of old coins.
5. Absentia (2011)
Tricia's husband Daniel has been missing for seven years. As she finally declares him "dead in absentia," her sister Callie visits to help her move on. Callie encounters a disoriented man near a tunnel close to Tricia's house, who claims that a creature inside it exchanges the living for the dead. Shortly after, Daniel returns, disoriented and strange. More disappearances follow, and Tricia sees a monstrous figure in her home.
6. Coherence (2013)
In "Coherence," eight friends gather for a nice dinner just as a comet is passing close to Earth. Weird stuff starts happening, like phones shattering and the power going out. Two guys venture out and find a second house that's identical to the one they left – complete with copies of themselves. Yep, the comet has created overlapping realities, and now they have to figure out how to stay in their "real" reality.
Spoiler: they mess it up.
7. Lake Mungo (2008)
This Australian mockumentary-style film feels too real, and that's what makes it creepy. Alice drowns while swimming with her family, and they're left to deal with their grief. But soon they discover that their home is haunted by Alice's ghost. They find her phone and watch a video of her burying something near Lake Mungo. When they dig it up, it's another phone with a video showing a ghostly figure resembling Alice.
8. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Meet Jane Doe, an unidentified body brought into a father-son coroner team's morgue. The external examination finds nothing, but when they cut her open, it's a horror show. Her internal organs are mutilated, as if she's been through hell – literally. They find strange objects sewn inside her and symbols written in ash.
It turns out, Jane is a victim of a centuries-old witch trial, cursed to eternal torment.
9. Grave Encounters (2011)
So you think those TV ghost hunting shows are a joke, huh? "Grave Encounters" will make you reconsider. A crew of a paranormal reality show locks itself inside an abandoned psychiatric hospital, famed for its ghostly activities. At first, they fake scares for the camera, but as the night progresses, the terror gets real. Members of the crew are picked off one by one, with the lead investigator being the last to lose his sanity.
10. The Ritual (2017)
Four British pals take a hiking trip in Sweden to honor their late friend. After one gets injured, they decide to take a shortcut through the forest – big mistake. They find an abandoned cabin with a creepy wooden idol inside. From there, it's a relentless game of cat and mouse with a monstrous creature from Norse mythology. It mimics their fears and traumas, tearing at their sanity before tearing into them.
