Can't Wait For The Boys S4? Here Are 5 Similar Shows To Check Out
The Boys is a unique show, but you can find some of its aspects in other projects.
It's been more than a year and a half since we saw the mind-blowing Season 3 finale of The Boys, in which Butcher once again failed to defeat Homelander and lost Ryan in the process. And it's been quite a drought for fans of the Eric Kripke show.
When Prime Video released the spinoff Gen V in September 2023, set in the same universe but featuring younger Supes, it was an enjoyable but brief snack for The Boys' massive fanbase that failed to satisfy their hunger for the original.
The good news is that The Boys Season 4 is premiering this year and the promo campaign has already started. The bad news is that we might have to wait a few more months before that happens.
If The Boys Season 4 teasers and posters have already put you in a satirical superhero mood, and you can't wait for the new episodes, we have only one suggestion. Check out other shows with similar vibes, starting with Gen V and the other The Boys animated spinoff, Diabolical.
Done with the spinoffs? Here are five other shows that might do the trick.
Peacemaker (2022-present)
Where to stream: Max, Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, etc.
The show that probably comes closest to The Boys in style and tone is James Gunn's Peacemaker. If you love all the clownish aspects of The Boys, you'll enjoy it. The fun, laid-back series centers on John Cena's character from The Suicide Squad and will be part of Gunn's new DCU when Season 2 arrives in 2025.
Invincible (2021-present)
Where to stream: Prime Video
Invincible is the best adult animated show about superheroes around, according to viewers. It follows a teenager transforming to a superhero under the guidance of his father, who is also the most powerful hero on the planet. The story is different from The Boys, but shares its dark, gory, twisted nature. Part 2 of Season 2 premieres on Prime Video in March of this year.
Mistfits (2009-2013)
Where to stream: Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, etc.
This British sci-fi dramedy is more like Gen V in plot and vibe. It tells the story of five juvenile delinquents who gain supernatural powers after an incident while doing community service. As you can imagine, the moral compass of the protagonists is not exactly your average heroic. The show ran for five seasons and managed to maintain high ratings with the audience.
The Umbrella Academy (2019-present)
Where to stream: Netflix
The Netflix show revolves around a dysfunctional family consisting of adopted siblings with superhero powers. After their father's death, they reunite to find out what caused it and prevent the impending apocalypse.
The Umbrella Academy is a much more classic superhero show than The Boys, but it leans heavily on the 'everyone with superpowers is messed up' trope that we love in the Eric Kripke series. The fourth and final season will premiere later this year.
Doom Patrol (2019-2023)
Where to stream: Max, Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, etc.
Created by Jeremy Carver, Doom Patrol is based on the DC Comics. It follows a team of unlikely heroes who have their powers as a result of tragic circumstances and are generally outcasts from society. The show is not afraid to focus on down-to-earth issues and spice them up with gross humor. It is funny, weird, and never does what you expect it to. Oh, and it stars Brendan Fraser.
