10 Underrated 2010s Teen Comedies That Deserve a Second Look
These films might have flown under the radar, but they deserve some more much-needed attention.
10. Fun Size (2012)
It's Halloween night, and Wren (Victoria Justice) gets invited to a party by her crush, Aaron. But guess what? She gets stuck babysitting her prankster little brother, Albert. Determined to not let this ruin her night, she takes Albert trick-or-treating, but the little rascal disappears.
Most of the movie is a wild goose chase across town to find Albert, involving a giant mechanical chicken, a car theft, and a weird guy named Fuzzy (Thomas Middleditch).
9. 21 & Over (2013)
Jeff Chang's (Justin Chon) 21st birthday is here, and his childhood friends Casey (Skylar Astin) and Miller (Miles Teller) surprise him with a night of partying. Problem is, Jeff has a super-important medical school interview the next morning. Throwing caution to the wind, they hit the bars and things get messy, like, literally. Jeff passes out and they don't know where he lives.
They roam around campus, getting into fights, evading cops, and even participating in a sorority initiation. Jeff's dad and the upcoming interview loom large as the night's craziness escalates.
8. G.B.F. (2013)
High school hierarchy can be brutal, but what if being gay suddenly becomes trendy? In "G.B.F.," Tanner (Michael J. Willett) accidentally gets outed and becomes the must-have accessory for the school's popular girls as their "Gay Best Friend."
Overnight, he's popular but alienated from his actual friends. He gets involved in typical high school drama – prom queen campaigns, cliques, and secret crushes – all while dealing with the challenges that come with his newfound status.
7. The To Do List (2013)
Planner in hand and eyes on the prize, that's our girl Brandy Klark (Aubrey Plaza) for you. Fresh out of high school and headed for college, Brandy realizes she's way behind in the, let's say, "intimate experience" department. So she creates a "to-do list" of sexual activities to complete before heading off to campus.
She's clinically methodical, treating each item like a school assignment, all while working at a pool with a bunch of quirky characters. Of course, she learns the hard way that love and physical intimacy can't be approached like a calculus problem.
6. Premature (2014)
Rob (John Karna) finds himself reliving the same day over and over, which wouldn't be so bad except that the day resets whenever he experiences an, ahem, "premature" moment. So, what's a teen boy to do but try to solve the problem by reliving the same awkward situations repeatedly?
Cue scenes of classroom humiliation, terrible advice from friends, and unsuccessful romantic encounters.
5. That Awkward Moment (2014)
Zac Efron, Miles Teller, and Michael B. Jordan star as three best friends who make a pact to stay single after one of them goes through a rough breakup. Each of them falls into complicated romantic situations that they try to go through without breaking the pact.
Whether it's casual relationships becoming more serious or unexpected romances with exes, these guys find out that when it comes to love, you can't plan everything.
4. The Spectacular Now (2013)
Sutter Keely (Miles Teller) is the life of the party but starts to question what he wants to do after high school. Enter Aimee Finicky (Shailene Woodley), a shy, bookish girl who's his opposite in every way. Together, they go through a summer of self-discovery, first love, and yes, a lot of awkward teen moments.
3. The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine, a high school junior who's always felt like the odd one out. Things go from bad to worse when her best friend starts dating her perfect older brother.
Nadine feels more alone than ever and even forms an unexpected friendship with an awkward, thoughtful classmate (Hayden Szeto). She also finds an unlikely mentor in her gruff history teacher (Woody Harrelson).
2. Easy A (2010)
"Easy A" centers on Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone), a straight-A student who lies to her best friend about losing her virginity. The rumor spreads like wildfire, and instead of shutting it down, Olive leans into her new "bad girl" reputation to help out some unpopular guys at school. She pretends to be their, ahem, romantic partner, in exchange for gift cards and other goodies.
She starts wearing provocative clothing with an 'A' sewn on, channeling Hester from "The Scarlet Letter." But things go south real quick.
1. The DUFF (2015)
Mae Whitman shines as Bianca, a high school senior who discovers she's been labeled the DUFF – Designated Ugly Fat Friend – by her prettier, more popular friends. Not willing to settle for this title, she asks her charming jock neighbor, Wesley (Robbie Amell), to help her ditch the label. They strike a deal: she helps him with his grades, and he gives her a social makeover.
The film follows Bianca's clumsy attempts to redefine herself, from wardrobe changes to disastrous dates, all while secretly falling for Wesley.
