Who hasn't dreamed of suddenly getting a new life?

The role-swapping trope is popular among filmmakers and audiences. It allows two characters, usually from opposite backgrounds, to step into each other's shoes and experience each other's lives.

This can provide a fresh look at our own situations and problems. Plus, the trope brings a number of unique twists and dramatic moments that keep you glued to the screen.

Here are seven recommendations of K-dramas that use this trope brilliantly.

The King's Affection (2021)

Set during the Joseon dynasty, where twinning was seen as a bad omen, the show follows a girl who was born into the royal family but given away because she was a twin. Years later, she is reunited with her brother, the Crown Prince, who is a spitting image of her, and takes his place.

One the Woman (2021)

The protagonist, a tough prosecutor, loses her memory after a car accident and is mistaken for a member of a dysfunctional wealthy family. When she arrives at their home, she is treated horribly by her new stepmother and the rest of the family, so she fights back.

Who Are You: School 2015 (2015)

Two identical twins are separated at an early age. One is adopted by a wealthy family and attends an elite private school. The other lives in an orphanage and is bullied at school. The girls are reunited under tragic circumstances.

Mask (2015)

A saleswoman discovers that she looks exactly like the rich daughter of a congressman and the fiancé of the heir to a huge corporation. But when the look-alike suddenly dies, their resemblance takes a dark turn. The protagonist is blackmailed into taking her doppelganger's place and gaslighting her husband-to-be.

Are You Human? (2018)

A wealthy heir to a huge conglomerate falls into a coma and, in order to keep his position, is replaced by a robot created by his estranged genius mother. The android looks exactly like the heir, but his bodyguard, a former MMA fighter, notices strange behavior and comments. So she embarks on a mission to find out the truth about him.

The Crowned Clown (2019)

The king of the mid-Joseon period places a clown who is his look-alike on the throne to escape assassination attempts. But as the clown settles into his new role, even the king's enemies must admit that he is a much better ruler.

A Time Called You (2023)

Not exactly the switch-place trope, but an interesting take on doppelgangers, the drama tells of a woman grieving the recent death of her boyfriend who suddenly travels 25 years back in time. There she discovers herself in the body of a high school student, a classmate of a boy who looks exactly like her deceased partner.
