Summary
- Ryan Reynolds revealed last year that he and his Deadpool co-writers had created a Christmas story starring Wade Wilson.
- Unfortunately, the movie got lost in the shuffle surrounding Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
- But now that next year promises to be the year of Deadpool, it makes sense for Disney to resurrect the project.
Last year's Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special proved that Marvel can and should put fan-favorite superheroes in festive winter settings and quirky, lighthearted Christmas adventures. James Gunn's special was fun, touching, entertaining, and set the perfect mood for the holidays.
While Marvel is sadly not continuing the holiday special trend this year, we know exactly what project the studio should be working on for next December.
Ryan Reynolds already has the perfect MCU holiday special
Last year, while chatting with Big Issue about his Christmas musical Spirited, Ryan Reynolds revealed that he and his Deadpool co-writers once penned a holiday story starring Wade Wilson, but it was shelved by the studio.
'Four years ago Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and I wrote a Christmas movie starring Deadpool. But it got lost in the shuffle of Disney acquiring Fox and it never got made,' the actor said. 'It's not a musical, but it's a full Deadpool Christmas movie.'
Marvel should release Deadpool holiday special in 2024
While Reynolds didn't go into detail about the Deadpool Christmas flick, we're sure it would be perfect for the holiday season of 2024. Here's why.
Now that Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox is complete, Deadpool 3, which premieres on July 26, 2024, is set to be the first film to feature the X-Men in full force, led by Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.
With the hilarious Reynolds-Jackman bromance that's been going on for years and many rumored heartwarming cameos, Deadpool 3 promises to be an exciting nostalgia fest for all Marvel fans and we're sure it will be one of the biggest box office hits of next year. After all, it is the only MCU project hitting theaters in 2024.
With that in mind, it makes sense for Disney to capitalize on the upcoming hype surrounding Deadpool and release a Christmas special following the third installment of the franchise.
The script written five years ago may need some rewrites to add the character of Wolverine and other X-Men, but all in all, there's no doubt that MCU fans will be happy with any story involving the beloved characters.
Production-wise, getting the special made shouldn't be a problem either. Last year's holiday special was filmed at the same time as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so with Deadpool 3 currently in the post-strike phase of production, shooting a Christmas story should be easy.
'Maybe one day we'll get to make that movie,' Reynolds told Big Issue.
Well, we hope that day comes next year. After all, Deadpool is kind of like Santa Claus. He wears red, is cheerful and immortal, and can sneak into houses like a ninja.
