Why this one is strange
An adaptation of Homer, rated R, shot entirely on IMAX film cameras — the first narrative feature ever to do that — with no franchise scaffolding and no established modern IP. The pitch was essentially "Nolan is making the Odyssey." That was enough for $1.35 billion.
Two of the four highest-grossing R-rated films ever are now a Marvel comedy and a three-thousand-year-old Greek poem. The theatrical business is fine, it's just deeply unpredictable.
Damon plays Odysseus, with Tom Holland, Hathaway and Pattinson alongside him. Projections have the film finishing somewhere north of $1.5 billion.
