How it ends
After the Season 4 finale killed JJ, Season 5 opens with the group grieving and chasing Chandler Groff, who murdered his own son and escaped with the Blue Crown. The hunt takes them abroad one last time, then home to Kildare, where Groff has helped himself to the Royal Merchant gold and a hurricane named Cassandra is closing in.
The gold comes back. The season ends with John B and Sarah married at the rebuilt Chateau, surrounded by everyone still standing, plus their newborn son — named JJ.
Where everyone lands:
- John B and Sarah: married, Chateau rebuilt, baby.
- Pope and Cleo: engaged, and they buy Tannyhill.
- Kiara: buys the Maybank property, becomes a marine biologist.
- Rafe: leaves the island for good with Sofia after old evidence tying him to Sheriff Peterkin's murder resurfaces.
The choice that earns it
The season dangles the Blue Crown and its supposed powers in front of an audience that badly wanted JJ back, then declines. The artifact ends up processing grief rather than reversing it — Kiara gets her memories and her closure, not her friend.
Speaking to Deadline, creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke said the closing scene was mapped out from the start. Josh Pate also pushed back on reading the finale's blue-lit meteor shower as supernatural: two people can look at the same sky, he argued, and one sees a sign while the other sees weather. Both characters exist in this show. He also noted the visual was modeled on real footage of a meteor shower.
Jonas Pate framed JJ's death as a hard but honest lesson for a young audience — the show never promised bad things wouldn't happen.
Five seasons of pirate gold and near-death escapes, and the last real decision it makes is to leave a dead teenager dead. That's a spine.
The credits gag: Rafe FaceTiming into the wedding, because the Pogue code holds even long distance.
