Season 1 of Our Flag Means Death (OFMD) was a sleeper hit. The majority of viewers discovered the show after it aired on Max in March 2022. But once they did, people couldn't get enough of the charming Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet, the naughty Blackbeard aka Ed Teach, and their unparalleled dynamic and chemistry.
That's why when Season 2 premiered on October 5th this year, viewers flocked to see it. And that's probably why the overall ratings for Season 2 were higher than for the premiere chapter.
Judging by the IMDb scores, viewers loved the subsequent season more than the first, but which episode was the best of the best for them? The answer may surprise you. Let's look at the top five episodes in order.
5. S1E10: Wherever You Go, There You Are
8.6/10
The Season 1 finale takes a well-deserved fifth place. It was amusing and heartwarming to see Stede grow up and find his way back to Ed and his crew. A truly satisfying conclusion to his Season 1 arc.
At the same time, it was devastating yet thrilling to see the broken-hearted Ed turn to his dark Blackbeard side. And the cliffhanger was oh so teasing.
4. S2E4: Fun and Games
8.6/10
Viewers loved Ed and Stede's visit to Mary Read and Anne Bonny's antique shop. Looking at the dysfunctional couple, they were finally able to talk and Stede got to make his love declaration that melt our hearts.
Not to mention the hilarious Buttons arc, which was a complete surprise.
3. S2E6: Calypso's Birthday
8.7/10
Calypso's Birthday had everything viewers love about OFMD and a little bit of some things we never knew we needed. Adventure, pirating, celebrating love and life, character growth, lots of romance including first sex between Ed and Stede, as well as a transformation and singing from Izzy. It was just perfect!
2. S2E5: The Curse of the Seafaring Life
8.8/10
This was a stunning kind of stand-alone sitcom-like episode with a cursed yet cheeky outfit, Lucius proposing to Black Pete, Ed trying to overcome his distrust of the Revenge crew and being 'so quiet', and Stede becoming a captain with the help of Ed and Izzy.
1. S2E3: The Innkeeper
8.9/10
The episode where the Revenge crew finally reunites on Zheng's ship and Stede tries to bring Ed back from the dead, who is in a kind of self-discovering purgatory, is nothing short of a masterpiece. The writing, the character development, the cinematography, the music, everything is perfect.
Oh, and of course there's the mermaid Stede. How could that not be a winner?
