The 'popular girl/average boy' trope is one of the classic arcs filmmakers use to create romantic stories. That's why it's often seen in older K-dramas as a sort of gender-swapped Cinderella story.
But in fact, the trope works just as well in modern romcoms. You have to admit, there is something intriguing about a successful woman meeting a guy who seems way below her level, but turns out to be her soul mate.
