It often happens that if you don't tune in to a TV show when it first airs, over time it becomes filled with all sorts of stereotypes and your own personal notions. You form a relationship with something you know nothing about.
That's why some viewers refuse to watch overhyped shows like Game of Thrones or Friends. In some cases, it's a good decision and the buzz doesn't match the actual viewing experience. But there are also times when a misconception about a show robs you of truly enjoyable TV time.
Here are five shows that Reddit viewers were at first reluctant to watch, but later wished they had.
One Piece (2023-present)
Where to stream: Netflix
Naturally, fans of the One Piece manga series and anime were initially wary of Netflix's live-action. After all, the streaming world is known for its terrible anime adaptations, and to make matters worse, Netflix entrusted the production of One Piece to the studio that had previously failed.
And yet, somehow, the project worked. When fans dared to watch Season 1, it turned out that the cast was perfect, the goofy character designs translated quite well on screen, the effects and set design were amazing, and the changes to the source material only enhanced the story.
Cobra Kai (2018-present)
Where to stream: Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu
When viewers heard about the television sequel to The Karate Kid, their first thought was that the showmakers were trying to cash in on the original's popularity. That's why many refused to watch the martial arts dramedy when it aired on YouTube Red.
But the transition to Netflix has given the show a new life and audience, proving to those who gave up and tuned in that it is, in fact, a wildly entertaining blast and a near-perfect continuation of the original.
Modern Family (2009-2020)
Where to stream: Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV, Vudu, Peacock
The title and synopsis of Modern Family (a mockumentary about three different types of families living in suburban Los Angeles) led many viewers to believe that it was a mediocre family sitcom with some modern varnish on it. Believe it or not, many people still didn't find the time to watch it.
However, those who gave it a shot were hooked from the first few episodes. Modern Family is a wholesome but adult and funny show that cuts no corners on the struggles of raising kids and contemporary family life.
The Good Place (2016-2020)
Where to stream: Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu
The first few episodes of The Good Place are pretty misleading, making many viewers abandon the show (a comedy set in a utopian afterlife, that's the weird premise, right?). But those who stuck around and made it to the finale admit that it was a memorable and even life-changing experience for them.
The Good Place is recommended for anyone suffering from an existential crisis, and as a bonus, its last episode is the best finale any show has ever aired, according to many seasoned viewers.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Where to stream: Netflix
How can a show about a chess prodigy be interesting, right? Well, that's what a lot of people thought when The Queen's Gambit premiered in 2020. And they were wrong.
The creators have answered the question of how to make a show about chess compelling perfectly. The plot is full of action and suspense, every minute and every scene works for the overall theme. And that theme is not chess (which is a thing for a few), but addiction (which is familiar to everyone).
The miniseries was quickly surrounded by hype, but in this case it was well deserved.
