1. "Frailty" (2001)
Directed by Bill Paxton, this one's got a Texas-sized twist. The story revolves around the Meiks family — two boys and their dad — who believe they've been chosen by God to kill demons disguised as humans. Dad sees a list of names in a vision and starts offing these so-called "demons." While the eldest son, Fenton, thinks Dad's gone mad, younger son Adam is all in.
It's a deeply unsettling family affair you won't want to miss.
2. "Session 9" (2001)
Let's talk abandoned asylums, shall we? A hazardous waste disposal team is contracted to clean out an old, creepy mental hospital. Sounds like a straightforward gig, right? Wrong. One of the workers finds old session tapes of a patient with multiple personalities. The more they listen, the weirder things get. Team members start to vanish, and the tension ratchets up to an almost unbearable level.
3. "The Others" (2001)
Remember when Nicole Kidman gave us chills in this atmospheric masterpiece? She plays Grace, a mom living with her two photosensitive kids in a dark, old mansion. They believe the house is haunted, and who could blame them? Mysterious footsteps, locked doors opening by themselves — the usual haunted house shenanigans.
They hire some new servants, but these aren't your run-of-the-mill housekeepers. Oh no, there's something much more spine-chilling going on.
4. "Dark Water" (2005)
What happens when a haunting story mixes with a heartbreaking custody battle? You get "Dark Water." A mother and daughter move into a dilapidated apartment only to discover a constant leak from the floor above. But there's more than mold growing; they start experiencing eerie visions of a little girl. Turns out, the leak has a backstory involving the disappearance of a child.
5. "Kairo" (2001)
Also known as "Pulse," this Japanese mind-bender deals with the world of the supernatural in a digital context. People start to disappear, and it seems linked to a mysterious website that shows shadowy figures in dark rooms. It begins as a quest for answers after a friend's suicide but turns into an existential crisis about loneliness and the afterlife.
Though it didn't make huge waves at the box office, its psychological horror vibes still resonate.
6. "The Skeleton Key" (2005)
Set in the sultry bayous of Louisiana, Kate Hudson plays a hospice nurse taking care of an ailing old man in a crumbling plantation home. Hoodoo magic is involved — oh yes, you heard that right.
Locked doors, creepy attics, and spells that shouldn't work but do — it's a supernatural recipe for dread. The further she delves into the hoodoo culture, the thicker the web of supernatural traps becomes.
7. "The Orphanage" (2007)
Produced by Guillermo del Toro, this Spanish-language film's got all the feels — and chills. Laura returns to her childhood orphanage with hopes of restoring it, along with her husband and adopted son Simón. But Simón goes missing, leading Laura on a desperate search.
There are creepy masked kids, hidden rooms, and a bone-chilling game of "one, two, three, knock on the wall."
8. "Shutter" (2004)
Before the American remake, there was the Thai original. A photographer and his girlfriend run over a woman and flee the scene. Big mistake. Soon after, mysterious shadows appear in his photographs. It's like the photographic version of "you reap what you sow," with increasingly horrifying repercussions.
Let's just say, it's a story about the consequences of guilt that'll make you think twice before taking a selfie.
9. "Thir13en Ghosts" (2001)
Okay, so it's not Oscar material, but it's a fun, freaky ride. A family inherits a weird glass mansion from an estranged uncle. But it's no ordinary house; it's a prison for 12 malevolent ghosts. When the house starts shifting its glass walls (yeah, you read that right), they realize they're part of a bigger, diabolical plan.
Ghosts, glass mazes, and a ton of suspense — it's like a haunted house on steroids.
10. "The Mist" (2007)
Based on a Stephen King novella, because, well, Stephen King. A mist envelops a small town, trapping people in a grocery store. But it's not just fog; there are terrifying, otherworldly creatures in it. Imagine being stuck between monsters outside and rising tensions inside, with people turning on each other. It's survival of the fittest in the most nightmarish way possible.
